Aquarius Moon is the new album from Brandon Agnew. It follows the songwriter’s 2021 full-length release, ’Mave's Variety’.

Like its predecessor, Aquarius Moon was recorded live off-the-floor at Banquet Sound Studio (Owner, @nixonboyd - Hollerado, Anyway Gang) in Toronto, engineered and produced by Joseph Stracuzzi.

The album features 7 songs written during the first winter of the pandemic; the strangest of times.

The album was recorded over two days in 2021 with James Gizzie (guitar), Andrew Barbisan (bass) and Bob Goodall (drums) as the backing band. A third studio day featured guitarist, Benny Gutman. Eddie Dupont added keyboard, Taylor Hulley added guitar and Laurel Minnes lent her voice.

The last isolated recording session between Brandon and Joseph was Feb 13, 2022 at Catland Studio in Port Robinson, Ontario. Unbeknownst to anyone, Brandon was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit in
Hamilton the next day in life-threatening condition. The project was thus halted for a number of months.

Aquarius Moon is a winter album.

Aquarius Moon is timestamped as being from a period of lockdown, protest and unrest. It dreams of a future with more certainty and care in political, environmental and social spheres.

The songs range in emotion from lighthearted and playful (Barstool Women Blues), to critical of global leadership (Gasoline On A Flame, Desperate Blues) and personal narratives such as Tension and James Street Blues, written about the experience of walking in downtown Hamilton with no-one around.

Of the messages the album shares, perhaps the synopsis is here:

“Once you speak, you’ll never get those words back.
Once a week, it’s nice to take a hot bath.
It’s good to keep a clear head cause you’ll never know what you’ll find,
And the blues will keep you occupied.”

James Street Blues I was walking but the streets were bare The only activity was at Mave’s Cafe There was something floating in the air It was nondescript but it filled me with anxiety The handle on the driver’s side broke So I climbed out through the passenger’s side I walked down James Street alone The blues will keep you occupied Don’t feel sorry, you were unaware The pain that I was feeling could’ve come from anywhere It could’ve come from Russia, it could’ve come from Belarus It could’ve come from the smell of your sweet perfume I couldn’t describe the feeling I was having Other than to say it left too much on my mind So I stuffed a poem inside my coat The blues will keep you occupied So you can take the rest of me aggressively Spread it out in a million pieces and see what catches your eye Between the skin and bone it's just fibrous muscle Between work and home is just side hustle I almost caught a butterfly once But I didn’t think it would be very kind Sometimes you just go on a hunch The blues will keep you occupied Once you speak you’ll never get those words back Once a week it’s nice to take a hot bath It’s good to keep a clear head, cause you never know what you’ll find The blues will keep you occupied

It’s obscene like gasoline falling on a flame It’s not right, well who would ever thought it’d be ok? You sit down beside me, say, “I don’t take this lightly” That’s not what I thought I’d hear you say It’s obscene like gasoline falling on a flame Put a stamp on it, drop it off straight in the mail Put an end to it cause nobody’s too big to fail There’s no sense in running, you got what was coming There’s nowhere for you to get away It’s obscene like gasoline falling on a flame I don’t know what you’re gonna do with all of that money But I ain’t throwing you a parachute just to fall back into the land of milk and honey It’s obscene, how’d you get away with it for so long? Beats me but it looks like the empire’s gonna fall There’s trouble in the parlour, there's badges without honour and a faceless man missing from the screen It’s obscene like gasoline falling on a flame It’s obscene like gasoline falling on a flame

Hot Water 03:13
I don’t know how it happened I was a dog just wagging my tail There was lightning over St. Catharines The next thing we knew it started to hail “You’ve got a way of weaving words wisely” Said the woman who was always wildly aware “Now, let’s not let this come in between us” As she picked a wildflower and put it in her hair The modern day is full of dilemma Let’s dedicate a day for lovers We walked past a shop owned by Sarah But by then Sarah was gone The future of the city belongs to corporations But they don’t bake you pies and they don’t know your mom Sometimes, it’s too much to handle Sometimes, it’s all too much to bear Why’s it always feel like the rollercoaster’s broken? You know, I didn’t sign up for this kind of fear The modern day needs to compromise Let’s dedicate a day for lullabies Cause we’re in hot, hot water! It’s time to settle up, it’s time to move past this We’ve got to leave something for the grandkids They want products with plenty of uses They’re so tired of our bullshit excuses The modern day needs to harmonize Let’s dedicate a day to bluer skies Cause we’re in hot, hot water!

Cemetery walking, broken blue You've got jars full of lemon, sugar too You say that nothing comes easy in this life You’ve seen some desperate days and some desperate nights You've got money in baskets, secret stashes You've been digging for gold but you're scattering ashes Drinking milk in the meadow of a lavender valley And desperate streets lead to desperate alleys There's a fox in the henhouse, Trump's in the Whitehouse I miss hearing Ms. Amy Winehouse You say there's too much shake, I say there's not enough shatter You're reaching desperate heights on a desperate ladder Who you gonna count on when the well runs dry? How you gonna get through with a tear in your eye? When will you decide what does and doesn’t matter? All these shamanistic stories of ordinary people In their fancy shirts in a boarded up steeple Forgotten world, misplaced glory Desperate living in a desperate story Futuristic bus stops, psychedelic gumdrops Laughing in the mirror until there’s no more cash crops Delegating doomsday, disassembling power Desperate kingdom in a desperate tower Where you gonna run to when the wall comes down? When do you figure they’re gonna figure you out? Another swing, another miss of unintelligible chatter Natural confusion, jumping to conclusion You're waving the flag of a broken institution Spinning in circles while someone steals your candy Desperate departure and a desperate landing What’s it going to feel like inside brand new skin? How will we know when the good side wins? Are batteries included? Is assembly required? I’m so tired

Secret Sally safe in Saskatoon She sure as heck's gonna be a wreck come Sunday afternoon Dark and stormy, she was betting on the house There's no moral to her story, there's no meaning to figure out And it never gets old … it only gets better with time Slow and steady, that’s how the race is won She's out rambling at midnight with a no good son-of-a-gun She peels the layers just like a tangerine It's a soapbox derby, she's an uptown movie queen And it never gets old … it only gets better with time She's wrapped all over her spiritual side In an unlit corner where she can hide She’s past her limit with nothing to lose Barstool women will give you the barstool women blues Oak and cherry, mahogany and pine She’s one-in-a-million with two more waiting outside She's smooth like butter, but she’ll kill you with her eyes And there’ll never be another and that’s just totally fine Cause it never gets old … it only gets better with time Ya, it never gets old … it only gets better with time

When the night moves in out of the corner of your eye And the stillness of your thoughts brings a panic to your mind It’s a feeling underneath It’s a feeling that you have It’s an object you can’t see Cause it hasn’t happened yet It’s the kind of blue that shakes you When the cold winds blow and your palms begin to sweat You had a dream about this once that you never could forget There were rumours overheard There were lines that were crossed You said you never doubted her But a loss is still a loss It’s the kind of blue that shakes you You beg yourself for mercy You put your head before your heart Your deep desires getting thirsty But that’s not the biggest part When the ice in your veins slowly starts to melt And you start feeling things you’ve never felt And the silence fills the room Where there used to be sound And the lighting gets dim As you slow your thoughts down It’s the kinda of blue that shakes you You beg yourself for mercy You wear your heart out on your sleeve Once they lock the doors behind you You’re never going to leave As your foot hits the floor on the twos and the fours She was a sketch in your mind now she’s standing at your door It’s a bridge you have to cross Another thing you have to weigh If there’s ever been a time Today is that day It’s the kinda of blue that shakes you Ya, it’s the kinda of blue that shakes you Ya, it’s the kinda of blue that shakes you

Tension 06:37
I’m not loosening up, these are real strange times I’ve got tension in my ribcage and tension on my mind It’s got me going and it’s all around Tension’s got my full attention now I can’t shake it off, I can’t figure it out I keep waiting for you to tell me what it’s about I called to Maria, I called to St. Jude You know I called myself important in a business man’s suit Oh, tension - Oh, tension Oh, tension, you’ve got my attention now I thought of heading down south just to start again I thought I’d rent myself a villa in the Yucatan Eating mangoes in the morning with the salt of the sea I’d lock myself away and just change the key Oh, tension - Oh, tension Oh, tension, you’ve got my attention now They say the red sky at night should’ve been my very first warning Don’t pull me out of bed - I’ll just see you first thing in the morning It’s been keeping me up, it’s been making me tense It’s been digging in my garden and climbing my fence Each one of my friends say that they’ve had it, too It’s changing our perspective and our point of view Oh, tension - Oh, tension Oh, tension, like a grade school detention I don’t know where I’ll be, I don’t know where I’ll land I don’t know if I’ll ever see another helping hand It’s not my choir and it’s not my song Tension’s got a hold of me and it’s pulling me along Oh, tension - Oh, tension Oh, tension - Of the things I can't mention ...
